Nigeria's capital city is unlike anywhere else in the country - planned, spread out, and built around wide boulevards and green hills rather than the density most people picture when they think of Nigerian cities. If you are visiting Abuja for the first time, here is where to start.
Aso Rock and the Presidential Villa
You cannot miss Aso Rock - the massive granite outcrop that gives the city its skyline and sits behind the Presidential Villa. You will not get inside the villa grounds without official business, but the rock itself is visible from much of the city and is worth a photo stop, especially at sunset.
The National Mosque and National Christian Centre
Facing each other across the Central Business District, the Nigerian National Mosque and the National Christian Centre are two of the city's most recognizable landmarks and a quiet reminder of how deliberately Abuja was planned as a shared capital for the whole country. Both are striking pieces of architecture worth seeing even from the outside.
Millennium Park
A large public park in Maitama with fountains, walking paths, and open lawns - a good place to slow down for an hour, especially in the early evening once the heat has eased off.
Jabi Lake
Jabi Lake Mall and the surrounding waterfront area are popular for boat rides, lakeside restaurants, and an evening stroll. It is one of the more relaxed spots in the city and a good option if you want scenery without leaving town.
Nike Art Gallery and Ushafa Pottery Village
For a look at Nigerian art and craft traditions, the Nike Art Gallery and the Ushafa Pottery Village (just outside the city) are both worth the trip if you have a spare afternoon.

Abuja is spread out, so where you stay matters. We are based in Mabushi, close enough to the Central Business District, Wuse, and Maitama to make most of the above an easy drive, with the added bonus of a rooftop lounge to end the day with the city skyline in view.
